A life without stress as an entrepreneur is hard to imagine. To have all your tasks ticked off in one day means you may be kept busy for 13 to 14 hours a day. However, this permanent tension can have consequences: headache, irritability, lack of sleep and cardiovascular problems are just a few examples. That’s why it makes perfect sense to learn to handle stress better. Here are a few tips.
Not everyone works equally effectively at any time. Some have their peak between 7 and 10 o’clock, others have their peak after lunch. Try to take your personal rhythm into account when planning your day to keep stress low. For example, aim at setting important dates in your personal work phases.
Whether you work physically or mentally, the performance of the body decreases after about 1.5 hours. More work in this state does not mean more performance and efficiency. Hence why it’s vital to treat yourself to regular breaks. For example, take a short walk before or after lunch and get plenty of fresh air every now and then. This replenishes your power reserves and helps you cope better with the stress of your work.
Can you be reached by mobile phone around the clock? If yes, don’t feel reluctant to switch off your mobile more often at the end of each workday or on the weekend. Yes, it’s true that you are an entrepreneur, but that doesn’t mean you can’t unwind every now and then. As for your emails, sort and answer them by importance. Prioritising tasks by importance also prevents stress from having a negative impact on your private life. Some answers can wait a bit!
Do you usually want to do everything yourself? Better check if you can delegate tasks to avoid unnecessary stress. This will give you time to take care of other important projects. In addition, you increase the motivation and satisfaction of those to whom you delegate responsibility according to their abilities and potential.
Everyone has their own limits of resilience. Saying no or giving a task is not a sign of weakness, but shows the ability to assess yourself and your resources correctly and to be able to prevent stress in the job.
Exercise is one of the most effective ways to keep your body and soul in balance. You do not have to be a competitive athlete: Even a light exercise three times a week, or half an hour of exercise a day or moderate sports such as walking and cycling will help you to get the necessary distance from everyday problems and stress. You can even integrate exercise into your everyday life, for example, by taking the stairs more often than the elevator.
If you find it hard to let go of your work routine, then relaxation techniques can help you unwind more easily. Try out autogenic training, progressive muscle relaxation, tai chi or yoga. These methods can let you temporarily forget the stress in the job.
Those who eat well can concentrate better and are more efficient. Make sure you have a balanced diet with enough fresh vegetables and fruits. Eat your meals without rushing, even if you have a lot of work piled on your desk. This is not only true for the meals during your lunch break, but also for breakfast and dinner.
In everyday professional life, we are used to scheduling our time. If you feel that you have to cut back on your free time because of stress from work, make appointments with yourself for activities or hobbies that you enjoy. Schedule these appointments until they become your favorite habit. With loose agreements, there is always the danger that they will fall prey to other, supposedly more important things.
Excess over-working is not a sign of strength. It’s better to take action before your limits are reached. Take warnings such as sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating and pain seriously and react at the first sign of overload. Delay the less important appointments and spend an afternoon with your loved ones – so you can refuel and better deal with your life as an entrepreneur.
