How do you get on with money? Do you get on well? What do you think about money? How do you feel about money? How does money treat you?
These questions are not as odd as they might appear because, in a way, money is like a person. Money is something that you have a relationship with. You need it just as much as you need the important people in your life. You have to deal with it every day and, depending on how you interact with it, you get different reactions and results.
Money is a very emotive subject for many people. Just as we have thoughts, memories and emotions that come up when we think about people, we have ideas, stories and feelings that come up when we think about money. All of these things affect how we behave in relation to money and consequently the financial results that we get.
So with all that said, how do you get on with money? Is it a good relationship or a bad one? If it’s a decent relationship, then you’ll be doing well financially. If it’s not so good, then you won’t. But the good news is that just as it’s possible to change a relationship with a person, it’s possible to do the same with money.
So how do we change our relationship to money? Some of what we think and feel about money will be on the surface and some of it will be buried in our subconscious. We need to become aware of the whole picture in order to improve our relationship.
The first step is to ask yourself a series of questions on the subject. What you want to get out are your opinions, ideas, memories, beliefs and feelings about money. Questions you could ask include what fears you have about money? What is the purpose of money? In your mind, what would you have to do in order to have more money? Do this exercise every day for a week because it may take that long for some of your deep-seated beliefs and thoughts to come into your awareness.
As with your opinions about people, you’ll find that some of your thoughts and feelings about money were influenced by what your family, friends and society as a whole told you to think. They would have put these ideas into your head when you were young and before you had the opportunity to make up your own mind. You’ll realise that you were programmed to think in ways that were not true.
The next step is to get to know money all over again for yourself. Form your own opinions. You’ll discover that money is very easy to get on with. You’ll find that money is fun to be around and that there is no need to be afraid of it. You’ll discover that if you treat it well it will treat you well in return. And the better you get on with money without any silly hang-ups, the more you’ll get from the association with it. It’ll end up being a rich and meaningful relationship.
